I have worked as an editor for many years. For a long time, editing primarily meant reading every sentence carefully, consulting reference sources and, where necessary, asking for clarification on subject-specific matters. Spelling, grammar, style, terminology, abbreviations and referencing are checked line by line for accuracy and consistency.
AI tools have changed this work. They are fast, but often alter style and structure without understanding a text’s subject matter or argument. This can introduce errors that defy human logic. For example, I have seen AI delete the end of a sentence entirely, leaving the thought unfinished. Sometimes AI also removes content that conflicts with its instructions, leaving gaps in the argument. In academic writing, this can alter meaning and weaken the reasoning.

AI-assisted basic proofreading corrects spelling, grammar and punctuation. It is suitable for texts that only require these language corrections. Editing goes much further: it includes stylistic revision and checks of terminology, consistency, clarity and adherence to academic standards. It is time-consuming and carried out exclusively by me.
