"Once AI is in the text, it is often difficult or even impossible to completely remove it."
Christa van Tonder-Berger
I specialise in the linguistic editing of academic, specialist and business texts. For almost 20 years, and professionally for more than five years, I have supported students, researchers and professionals in preparing clear, accurate and publication-ready documents.
My background in Cultural Anthropology, combined with medical technical training and experience in editing, communication and project development, allows me to approach every text from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Today, I work with clients from academia, research and industry, editing bachelor's dissertations, master's dissertations, doctoral theses, academic publications, manuscripts and business documents.

Quality assurance
For many years, I have worked as an editor, and during this time my profession has changed fundamentally. Editing used to mean above all careful sentence-by-sentence reading, consulting dictionaries and, at times, seeking specialist feedback. Spelling, grammar as well as style and expression were checked on the basis of linguistic sensitivity and subject knowledge. Line by line, section by section, content, coherence, terminology, the consistent use of abbreviations, citation styles and other formal elements were checked for uniformity and consistency.
With the emergence of AI-powered writing and correction tools, this work has changed. Editing is indeed faster today, but automated suggestions often interfere with the style and structure of a text without truly taking into account the substantive content or the individual argument of the author. In my experience, artificial intelligence makes errors that defy human logic, such as in one case where the final words of a sentence were deleted without replacement, leaving the sentence to break off mid-thought.
In some cases, it also alters or removes content that contradicts its pre-programmed parameters, even where that content is in fact essential to the line of argument.
This is particularly problematic in academic texts, as it can lead to shifts in meaning and undermine the traceability of the reasoning. Against this background, I offer both approaches with full conviction and leave the decision to my clients as to whether they prefer editing supported by modern tools or a fully classical edit without the use of AI.
The AI-assisted basic proofreading service focuses on correcting spelling, grammar and punctuation and is suitable for texts that require basic language correction only. Editing goes considerably further and is significantly more time-consuming. It includes the individual refinement of language and style, as well as the review of terminology, consistency, clarity and compliance with academic standards. Every editing project is carried out personally by me. For this reason, I deliberately do not offer AI-assisted editing.
If someone chooses the AI-free option, they often do so because of examination regulations or plagiarism policies, because they wish to keep their own work transparent and traceable, or simply because they prefer not to use AI at all. I expressly want to offer this choice. Upon request, I am very happy to provide written confirmation that the work has been completed entirely without the use of AI.
